Hit the Trail...the Wellness Trail

Wegmans Passport to family wellness

By Leah Levine, Publisher Macaroni Kid Greece-NW Rochester June 29, 2018

With warmer weather and the kids being home, getting outdoors for family fun is essential! Always looking for new things to  do in the community, I learned about Wegmans passport to family wellness, a guide to local walking, biking and canoe trails, and was so excited to not only explore new areas of Greece but also include the whole family on our journey to a healthier, better life! I learned from the Passport that in the Town of Greece alone there are OVER 40 miles of recreational trails and 6 canoe launches!  Who knew? Summer time is the perfect time to get outside and explore, but if you don't have the time during summer, no worries, some of these trails are accessible during the winter for skiing and snowshoeing!

Since 2005, Wegmans has partnered with town and city recreation programs and park conservancy groups to encourage folks to take advantage of their community's town and county trails. Wegmans has designed passports specific to each town and area that include multiple trails that allow you to match your interest and activity level. Whether you want to bike ride along the Erie Canalway Trail or enjoy a leisure walk with your family at Canal Ponds Trails you will be sure to experience a great time!

Last week, I filled some water bottles and picked up 5 Passports from Wegmans front desk and took my family to Canal Ponds Trail!  It was a bright and cool morning! I put my active toddler in her stroller and  thought to myself how I have been in this area many times for doctors appointments, actually for weekly allergy shots, and noticed the pavilions and benches but I have never taken the time to appreciate the trail! So we loaded the water bottles in the stroller and off we went on the paved trail!  Smooth walking, calmness in the air and enjoying the hidden beauty that the town of Greece has to offer, all thanks to the Wegmans Passport to family wellness! We walked about 2 miles, I'll admit we may have circled around a time (or maybe two) but each time we noticed something different. My toddler was excited every time we crossed a bridge. She would have to get out of the stroller and walk over herself. She really enjoy the scenery below and at one point we saw a large fish in the canal, she squatted down in amazement and said "woooowwwww!" It was the cutest thing ever! I wish I had recorded it!  As we continued along the trail we saw geese, beautiful birds, and different wildlife in the canal! The fountains were also calming to watch.  We passed people fishing in the canal, we said hello to new people we did not know walking the paths, but most importantly we were getting in family time and family fun all while doing something healthy.

As if completing a trail isn't fun enough, Wegmans has an added incentive to get you out and on these trails! Each trail within the passport has a box for a marker rubbing.  While, my family could not find the marking at Canal Ponds Trail, I have  been assured they are out there! The marking is on a 3-foot pole along the trail. It is a slate with raised letters so you can make the marker rubbing on your passport. Don't forget to pack a pencil or a crayon with you to do so.

The incentives for the town of Greece are:

  • Complete 6 trails or 3 canoe routes and receive a coupon redeemable for a Wegmans Product.
  • Complete all 12 trails or all 5 canoe routes and be entered to win the Grand Prize!; a $100 Wegmans gift card for a free Wegmans picnic and a free Lodge Rental at Braddock Bay Park. The Grand Prize winner is drawn every year in June!

Bring your Passport booklet to the Town of Greece Community Center at 3 Vince Tofany Boulevard to claim a prize!

Enjoy the outdoors with your family this year and Hit The Trail, with your wellness passport, for a healthier, better life for all!
